Not Your Typical Book Club!
Spoiler Alert. Please read Silent Ties and come back to learn more!
During the editing process, some readers wanted me to change the final scene. I tried, in vain, to explain why it was the only end possible. They wanted Addie to pick up the telephone, call Missy, and say, “Oh my friend, I have missed you. I treasured those years just as you did. I can’t wait to see you and be friends again.” My explanations regarding Addie’s reaction fell on deaf ears, and may well with you. One individual said, “Well, I guess you did the research and understand the issues better than I do.” In that moment the idea was born for “Not your typical book club!”
I invite you to gather a group of friends to learn about the world Addie was forced to live in and examine their friendship from her point of view. I challenge you to see those moments in Addie’s kitchen as a different happy ending: her happy ending. She was given the apology that was long overdue; there was recognition of the injustice her family endured, and a truth was acknowledged that rules have nothing to do with who you are, but who society perceives you to be.
My blogs for ten consecutive months will introduce you to books or subjects to explore. I invite you and your friends to learn about the real world of Addie, and gather around the water cooler to discuss! Perhaps it is not the happy ending Missy wanted but was it the happiest ending possible for Addie?
